#2013alive: Get Outside for Lunch

Welcome to month 6, week 2 of our 12 Months of Wellness. This week, we try to get outside for our lunch breaks.

Here at alive, we eagerly await the summer months all year, when we can head outside and eat our lunches at the picnic tables on our office grounds. The juggling it takes to carry our dishes, cutlery, and water glasses outside is well worth basking in the sunshine during our breaks!

For week 2 of June’s 12 Months of Wellness, we’re encouraging others to spend their lunch breaks outside as well. Whether you eat outside or you take a stroll outside after eating, or whether you convert your coworkers or go solo, the point is that we get outdoors and away from our desks.

We all know that sitting all day is bad for our health, but it can be surprising just how bad it really is. According to a 2012 study, those who spent the most time sitting during the day had a:

  • 147 percent increased risk of cardiovascular events
  • 112 percent increased risk of diabetes
  • 90 percent increased risk of death from a cardiovascular event
  • 49 percent increased risk of death from any cause

On a lighter note, just a change of scenery from our computer screens can be so refreshing! So why not join us?

Follow us!

Do you and your coworkers get outside during your lunch breaks? Drop us a line via blog or Facebook comments, or by using the Twitter hashtag #2013alive to let us know how you’re doing on your 2013 journey!

Plus, tune in to find out how we’re doing by checking our ongoing Twitter, Facebook, and blog posts. Don’t forget to download your June 12 Months of Wellness goal tracking sheet!
